A royal hike

Caminito del Rey is a narrow pathway that passes through two vast canyons, built off the side of massive limestone cliffs, with a 350 foot drop below and breathtaking views around each corner. It translates to “The King’s little walk.” And I felt like royalty being able to experience the beauty of this hike!

The hike used to be called the most dangerous walkway in the world. It only reopened a few years back after they built a new path over the old one. Helmets are required because of falling rocks.

Me looking down at the old path - built with railroad tracks that had big chunks of stone missing for adrenaline seekers to jump over! Then they shut it down to build a safer pathway over it.

Our group was made of mostly Americans (minus the couple on the right who were from the Netherlands).

This was another Airbnb experience I booked with the same tour guide from the Frigiliana village visit. It was so easy! Our tour guide Alfonso picked us up in Málaga centro and the drive was about an hour each way. I braved through a little car sickness - but it was totally worth it!

Especially because we were rewarded with a picnic halfway through the hike that Alfonso packed for us. Food keeps me happy.

My favorite part of the hike was walking across this suspension bridge to the other side of the canyon!

We also lucked out with the weather! Not too hot, not too cold - and most importantly, not too windy. They get serious trail winds that shut down parts of pathway quite often. And the trail had just opened again after it closed for two weeks due to a bad rock slide.

Aflonso, our licensed geographer tour guide, pointing out different types of terrain and interesting historical tid-bits throughout our hike.

Caminito del Rey definitely soars to the top of my list of the best hikes I’ve experienced yet!
